The “Wanpaku Sumo” Competition is an annual Sumo sports event for elementary-school-aged children held by Junior Chambers all over the country, including Shinjuku, starting with local competitions, with the winners going to Regional and finally to the National Championship, held at the real Kokugikan sumo hall.
It’s an unique opportunity for children to engage in heated Sumo battles, as well as parents and volunteer staff to be part of a community and national event with a long tradition. Many famous Sumo figher’s careers actually started at Wanpaku Sumo.
Shinjuku’s Wanpaku Sumo competition is being held on May 12, 2018, under the motto “Courage to move forward – take the first step towards tomorrow”.
The competition’s goals are to provide an opportunity for children to grow both physically and mentally through the sports of Sumo, by providing an oportunity to find the courage to go into a fight, have compassion for others with whom you fight, and value manners and courtesy by practicing this tradition-rich sport. The winners will be participating in the Tokyo Championship and onward to the National Championship.
